What is the biggest thing holding your company back at the moment? Unless you have the greatest employees in the world it is probably the productivity of the entire workforce. Some people like to sit around taking their time when they work. This is OK up until a certain point, but when they start taking advantage of the fact they get paid an hourly wage it can have a big impact on the amount of money you make. Can you imagine how much profit you would make if everyone started working twice as hard?
You can’t keep going on like this forever and now is the time to do something about it. You can go around changing lots of other things that will push the company forward, but you are better starting with employee productivity because it can have the biggest impact on the future. You can’t stand behind people with a stick and clip them over the hand when they start to get lazy, so we’re going to look at a few legal ways you can take productivity up a few notches.
Spy on them
This is legal, believe it or not, but only if you do it the right way. You can monitor the websites they look at when they are meant to be working and if they’re messing around on Facebook you can speak to them. If an employee knows you are monitoring their activity they will be less likely to goof around when they are meant to be working. Social media is such a distraction there days and anyone can become obsessed with it until their work is affected.
Make them feel good
An employee should work hard because you’re paying them to do a job. You’re not paying them to sit about doing nothing, but just because they work hard doesn’t mean they can’t work harder. You could increase their productivity by making them feel good. How you do that will obviously depend on the type of business you run, but it could be things like flexi-time, work-incentivized bonuses, an office radio, etc. Pick anything that will make them happy, which will result in you making more money.
Listen to people and change things
Everyone loves to feel like someone is listening to them and your employees will love it if they feel like they can recommend things to you. If there are easier ways to carry out a job you should take your employees advice and change things. Just because you’ve done something a certain way for a long time doesn’t mean there are not ways to get the job done faster. If you can implement some changes that will save people time you’ll increase their productivity.
Make sure they look up to you
When your employees look up and you’re hard at work it will encourage them to work even harder than before. If, on the other hand, you’re the kind of boss who likes to sit around and read magazines it could end up rubbing off on them. They should also feel comfortable approaching you about any problems they’re having because they will respect you as a person. When someone respects you it means they will try and please you.
Forget about multitasking
There will be some instances where multitasking serves a purpose, but any other time it’s just a good way to slow someone down. When an employee is concentrating on a particular job they are focused on the task at hand. When they have to stop what they are doing every 5 minutes it knocks them off target. They have to get back into the proper mindset again and it wastes valuable time, so use multitasking sparingly if you use it at all.
