Cheeses of Quebec

In this summer of festivals, one of the most pleasurable festivals occurs south-east of Montreal in the town of Warwick. The Warwick Cheese Festival will be held from June 17 to 19. Some 38 cheesemakers will be displaying over 100 varieties. Quebec has established a premier position in Canada for the number of speciality cheeses manufactured here and there is an explosive growth to the industry. You’ll find a fount of information in a website entitled, Fromages du Qubec. Perhaps one of the most striking cheeses at the Festival will be one called Le Grand Manitou after the First Nations’ deity. It’s a first in Quebec since it’s made from three milks, cows, goats and sheep. One hundred years ago only Oka cheese was known outside the Province but now Quebec cheeses are world famous. For Quebec this is big business, since it produces 49% of all cheese made in Canada. This involves 1.5 billion litres of milk going annually into cheeses. A newly formed promotion group, Socit des fromages du Qubec, will help to boost sales further. If all this talk of cheese has kindled your appetite, you don’t need to go further than the Atwater Market. There you will find the Fromagerie du March Atwater. Over 40% of their 250 varieties of cheeses are local. What more could you ask for?
